Preparing for a live-in carer

What should I do before a live-in carer moves in? How can I prepare the house for the arrival of a new carer?

It’s great to be thinking in advance about what changes you need to make to your home before a new placement begins. Preparing before the carer arrives and ensuring they have their own space and access to facilities they need, will help them feel at home so they can focus on delivering the best care.

At Hamilton George Care, our registered nurse Alyce will visit the home - sometimes more than once - to undertake her Clinical Assessment. This is a sensitive and holistic review that takes into account both clinical and lifestyle needs in order to create the care plan. She will also use this time to discuss any relevant recommendations or introductions.

What Live-In Carers Require:

1. A private bedroom

A live-in carer requires their own bedroom – a private space where they can retreat and recharge. It should be comfortable, clean, with adequate heating, ventilation and storage space. In homes lacking a spare room, it's often necessary to repurpose existing spaces like a study or convert areas such as a garage. Proximity is also a consideration, as being within earshot of the relative may be required.

2. Kitchen access

A carer will need the use of the kitchen to prepare meals, not only for the person they're looking after but for themselves as well. The kitchen could also be a space to bond. If cooking is an activity enjoyed by you or your loved one, the carer will give space and step in only when necessary. A carer will work around household routines to prepare their own meals and snacks.

3. Bathroom access

Additionally, carers must have access to a clean and functional bathroom. A private en-suite is not a necessity, but shared facilities should be maintained in good condition. Providing space for personal toiletries is a simple way to help them feel more at home.

4. Wifi

Reliable Wifi access is another significant provision for live-in carers. Crucial for the practical aspects of their duties, such as recording progress notes and communication with healthcare providers, Wifi also supports personal use during downtime, allowing carers moments of leisure and contact with friends and family.

A fully managed agency such as Hamilton George Care will offer comprehensive support and advice for setting up care in your home. Fully managed agencies not only vet and train their carers to ensure high standards of care and compatibility with your specific needs but also guide you through the process of preparing your home for a live-in carer.
They can offer personalised recommendations on how to adapt your living space, manage legal and financial considerations, and ensure both you and your carer have everything needed for a successful care setup.

We would be very happy to speak with you about your care needs. Whether you are looking for care now or simply planning for the future, we can guide you through the process and help you make the right choice for you and your loved ones.
